Phil Galfond Challenge vs. 'VeniVidi1993'
The first match of the Galfond Challenge sees Phil Galfond take on 'VeniVidi1993' in 25,000 hands of €100-€200 PLO

Things have not been going well for Phil Galfond in the ‘Galfond Challenge,’ and the downswing continued on Monday for the 10th day of play against ‘VeniVidi1993.’ The two battled for another 696 hands of €100-€200 PLO on Run It Once Poker, with ‘VeniVidi1993‘ winning €100,993.30 on the session.

Galfond and ‘VeniVidi1993’ are now 6,842 hands through their 25,000-hand match. With Monday’s win, ‘VeniVidi1993’ improved to being up €553,516.95 overall.

Although he did lose six figures in Monday’s session, Galfond was down more than €170,000 at one portion of the session. In the last hour or so, Galfond battled back in a big way to only end up down €100,993.30. It’s still a sizable loss and one that added to the lead of ‘VeniVidi1993’ in a big way, but Galfond and his supporters have a positive takeaway that the loss wasn’t nearly as bad as it looked like it was going to be.

The first hand we’ll look at from Monday’s play came shortly after play kicked off. Galfond was up five figures at the time, but this pot set him back after he got stacked by ‘VeniVidi1993.’ in a €43,673.98 hand.

‘VeniVidi1993’ opened the action with a raise to €600, Galfond reraised to €1,800, and then ‘VeniVidi1993’ kicked it up to €5,400. Galfond called and the two took a Jh8s2d flop. Galfond checked and ‘VeniVidi1993’ fired €10,799 for a pot-sized wager. Galfond raised all in for €16,437.49 and ‘VeniVidi1993’ called.

Galfond showed the KcQcJd5d and was up against the AcAhKs7s for ‘VeniVidi1993.’ The turn was the 6h and river the 2c to give ‘VeniVidi1993’ the pot.

Not too long after, the two played another pot of more than €40,000. Only this time, the money went in on the turn instead of on the flop.

With €1,199 in the middle on the KdJd4c flop, Galfond checked, ‘VeniVidi1993’ bet €803.33, and Galfond raised to €2,206.16. ‘VeniVidi1993’ called to see the 2h land on fourth street. Galfond checked, ‘VeniVidi1993’ bet €5,611.32, and Galfond check-raised for a second consecutive street, this time to €18,203.67 and was all in. ‘VeniVidi1993’ called.

‘VeniVidi1993’ showed the AhAdQd7h and Galfond had the Jh7c4s4h. Galfond had flopped a set of fours and improved to jacks full of fours with the river coming the Jc. This gave Galfond the €42,018.66 pot.

The next hand was another good one for Galfond. Only on this one, he went to showdown after flopping quads but ‘VeniVidi1993’ didn’t bite on the river.

On the JsJd3d flop, Galfond bet €600 and ‘VeniVidi1993’ raised to €3,047.49. Galfond called and the turn was the Qh. Both players checked and the Qs paired the board for a second time on the river. Galfond checked again, but ‘VeniVidi1993’ didn’t go for a bet and just checked behind. Galfond had the JhJcTc4h for flopped quads and pulled in the €9,693.98 pot.

Later in the match, Galfond tried a bluff holding a flush blocker but it didn’t work out.

With nearly €5,400 in the middle on the Ad8d6d5c board, ‘VeniVidi1993’ checked and Galfond bet the full pot of €5,398.50. ‘VeniVidi1993’ called and the river was the Td. ‘VeniVidi1993’ checked and Galfond fired another pot-sized bet, this time for €16,195.50. ‘VeniVidi1993’ made the call.

Galfond showed the Qd8s7h2h, but it was the JdTs9d8c for ‘VeniVidi1993’ that was best. ‘VeniVidi1993’ had a jack-high diamond flush and pulled in the €48,586.50 pot.

Another €39,999 pot that took place was the following one, and ‘VeniVidi1993’ scooped it with another jack-high flush.

Galfond had raised from the button to €600, ‘VeniVidi1993’ reraised to €1,800, and Galfond called to see the 7h3s2s flop. ‘VeniVidi1993’ bet €3,599 and Galfond raised to €14,396. ‘VeniVidi1993’ stuck all the money in to set Galfond, who had just €3,804 behind, all in. Galfond called.

‘VeniVidi1993’ showed the AdJhJs9s and Galfond had the 6d5d3c2c. The 7s on the turn gave ‘VeniVidi1993’ a spade flush, then the 4d completed the board on the river and ‘VeniVidi1993’ won the hand.

On the KhThTd2c8s board, there was €5,598 in the middle. Galfond checked and ‘VeniVidi1993’ bet €2,854.98. Galfond check-raised to €14,162.94 and left himself with €3,037.56 behind. ‘VeniVidi1993’ reraised to put Galfond all in, to which Galfond responded with a tank-fold.

What’s Next for the Galfond Challenge?

Almost 7,000 hands into the match against ‘VeniVidi1993,’ Galfond is down more than half a million dollars. The match is now more than 27% of the way complete and things don’t look good for Galfond in terms of his ability to win the side bet action, which has Galfond’s €200,000 up against the €100,000 for ‘VeniVidi1993.’
